The project aims to address the problem of the limitations of current Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) and camera technologies for autonomous driving. Traditional mechanical LIDAR systems are bulky, expensive, and require frequent maintenance, the MEMS LIDAR’s that we have just begun to see in market are far from the intended price-performance point, while existing camera technology alone is not sufficient for accurate and reliable navigation in challenging road conditions. Another problem is the processing need of huge point cloud data produced by new generation LIDAR’s and stereo camera solutions. This creates a need for a more reliable, compact, cost-effective solution with low need for postprocessing that can offer accurate and detailed awareness of the environment surrounding the vehicle.

The innovative aspect of the project is the use of solid-state LIDAR and camera technology in fusion, along with advanced data integration algorithms. The solid-state LIDAR system offers a smaller, lighter, more reliable, and longer-lasting alternative to mechanical LIDAR systems, while the fusion technology provides a more detailed and accurate image of objects surrounding the vehicle. The advanced data integration algorithms enable accurate and reliable navigation in challenging conditions, such as high-speed driving.
