Virtual Reality for Real-Life Rehabilitation

A collaboration in the field of VR and Therapeutic Movement Development

Researchers at HUN-REN SZTAKI, in partnership with Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) and Bethesda Children’s Hospital, are involved in an exciting research and development initiative. Their goal is to incorporate virtual reality (VR) into active movement therapy to enhance rehabilitation outcomes.

The institute's role focuses on software development and data analysis, specifically for the rehabilitation of 14–18-year-olds recovering from knee surgery. The research aims to compare traditional physiotherapy with VR-supported physiotherapy, with special emphasis on the potential of VR applications in the active treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFP).

Using 3D cameras for motion analysis, the project enables detailed tracking of patients' physical progress. This work is expected to provide new insights into the therapeutic effectiveness of VR technology and could expand rehabilitation options available for young patients.
